In the 1950s Martin Luther King and many others organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott. During that time police
brutality was rampant, discrimination was the law of the land, and gruesome lynchings were common place. It was a boycott
for respect. Respect for humanity and the choices people wanted to make on something as simple as a bus, was necessary in
order to begin a process which would address many other pressing issues.
The removal of the name of Thomas Jefferson from the park and recreation center in Spanish Harlem is a similar
battle. This symbol of racism must be removed from our midst as a matter of respect and dignity, so that we can proceed in
the other fights to remedy the ills of America. Help us by making a call, fax, sending an email, or letter expressing your
disgust and belief that the name should be changed to one that does honor to all members of the community.

Thomas Jefferson said that blacks stink, were dull and tasteless, were ugly, were inferior
and should be deported.
